Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg – Women’s Center

ViaChristi Women's Hospital

Location: Pittsburg, Kansas
Year Completed: 2012
Size: 26,000 SF

HMN Architects partnered with Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg on the renovation of the third floor of their existing patient tower.

Before designing the Women’s Center, HMN’s team accompanied Via Christi on a tour of several other facilities to “benchmark” the preferred configuration for the new unit. The project team then developed labor delivery and postpartum mock-up rooms to determine the desired layout of these spaces.

The completed Women’s Center is three times the size of the previous unit, which opened in 1971. While the previous center had three labors and 13 all-private postpartum rooms.

Rooms are equipped with hotel-style amenities, including flat-screen television, recliners and larger bathrooms with showers and hair dryers. Postpartum rooms have queen-sized beds to enable couples to bond with their newborn.

The renovation includes two, new triage rooms and a central fetal monitoring system, so nurses can monitor multiple babies. An enhanced level 2 nursery provides a more intense level of care for sick babies who can now be born at this hospital instead of having to be delivered elsewhere.
