HMN Architects was selected to design the new Webster County Justice Center, replacing the county’s outdated jail housed in the 1941 courthouse. The chosen site – the long-standing Robertson Building on the northeast corner of the town square – had been a community anchor since 1894. To honor that history, the design incorporated several of the Robertson’s defining architectural elements, including a pediment, a covered walkway, and its signature red brick.
The resulting facility is substantially larger and brings together the jail, Sheriff’s Office, and a courtroom. A two-story entry features a prominent gabled skylight, while natural light continues through a curtain wall along the lobby’s covered south side and around the east end, allowing for future expansion of court functions.
The 110-bed jail includes the Jail Administrator’s office and dedicated staff work areas. The Sheriff’s Office provides space for the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, Administrative Supervisor, and a large flexible workspace serving administrative staff, detectives, and road patrol. The third level houses the jury courtroom, along with offices for the Clerk of the Court, County Attorney, and Judge.
After thorough research, HMN was our team of choice for Webster County. Most importantly, they listened to us and our needs and delivered options quickly and within budget. They are here when we need them, easy to communicate with, and overall outstanding architects. I would highly recommend the HMN Architects Justice Team.
