2013

HMN Architects partnered with Clay County to design a 28-bed detention center and Sheriff’s Office, successfully meeting the needs of staff, stakeholders, and the community. The facility includes 20 general population beds, six work-release beds, and two medical/administrative segregation beds, along with six holding cells, five dayrooms, a warming kitchen, laundry, and indoor/outdoor exercise yards.

Unique design features include a squad room for road patrol, a large evidence storage area with pass-through lockers, a vehicular sallyport, and a multi-purpose training and meeting space that doubles as an emergency operations center. The exterior combines fiber-reinforced concrete, sandblasted precast panels, and flat and low-sloped standing metal roofs.

Sustainability measures include geothermal systems and energy savings from the local utility. A local architect on the design team helped promote strong community involvement, ensuring the facility meets both operational and civic goals.
