Set within the unique context of a vacant 1960s papermill, HMN Architects provided full architectural, interior design, and planning services for repurposing the building into the county’s Justice Center.
Phase 1: Justice Center – Rapid county growth had exceeded the existing jail’s inmate holding capacity, making expansion and modernization a priority. The county acquired a vacant 1960s paper mill, which HMN helped re-purpose into a fully functional Justice Center.
Phase 2: Courts Complex – The new courts facility includes two courtrooms, a hearing room, and a law library. By situating the courts adjacent to the jail, HMN eliminated the need for inmate transport. Inmates are now securely escorted via a dedicated corridor directly to a holding area located between the courtrooms, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
I was very pleased with the consultation and interaction between our local court and HMN Architects. HMN listened to the wants and needs of the court and provided options so we may choose what works best for our area and legal environment. I felt the planning process was a partnership to provide the best product for our courts.
