Ronald McDonald House Charities of KC – Wylie House

Ronald McDonald House

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Year Completed: 2015
Size: 22,000 SF
Awards and Publications: Design Cost Data Magazine – January/February 2016 Edition; Architect Magazine 2015

HMN Architects partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City and Centric Projects in the design and construction of the Wylie House, named in honor of Jack and Glenna Wylie, whose generous gift help make the house possible. Wylie House joins Cherry Street House, Longfellow House, and the Children’s Mercy Family Room in proving a “home away from home” for families of children who are undergoing vital medical care.

Both outside and inside the new Wylie House has been designed to be a place of both warmth and brightness that adds to the fabric of the local neighborhood. The exterior of the building is anchored by natural stone and wrap-around covered porch that reflects the historical residential architecture of the area.

Wylie House Project

Inside the Wylie House consists of four levels and nearly 22,000 SF of interior space. The main foyer is highlighted by a four-story open stained wood staircase through which pierces the giant, LED-lit donor art sculpture that runs from the basement of the house to the roof, designed by local artist Chris Duh. This is one of many artistic touches throughout the house from talented designers who collaborated throughout the project, including Jennifer Bertrand, who worked with HMN throughout the process to create the inspirational environment inside, Donald “Scribe” Ross who created artwork at the check-in area and inside the elevator and BSA LifeStructures who provided continual collaborative input as the owner’s representative.

The kitchen is large and open to facilitate the food and meal preparation that is provided for families on a daily basis by volunteers. At the front of the house the hearth room’s large windows and stone fireplace provide a bright and comfortable respite space while the nearby library space offers a more sequestered place to plug in a laptop or read a book. The basement features a media room for movie nights that includes a lighted marquee sign and warm yet playful stained millwork, seating and wall textures inside. Also featured in the basement is an interactive children’s play area. The upper two floors of the Wylie House contain a total of 20 bedrooms for temporary family lodging featuring window seats and large windows for natural light. These floors are more private with small areas of quiet respite such as a bright, secluded common area to get some work done and a small, trellised back porch.

Wylie House is allowing Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City to serve the community in an even greater capacity and the love and collaboration put into its design and construction has resulted in not merely a “house” but truly a special “home away from home” for those experiencing the toughest moments in their lives.
