Ronald McDonald House Charities of KC – The Wylie House

Ronald McDonald House

Client: Ronald McDonald House Charities of KC |  Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Year Completed: 2015  |  Size: 22,000 SF

HMN Architects partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City to provide architectural, interior design, and planning services for the Wylie House.

Wylie House allows the RMH Charities to serve the community in an even greater capacity. The love and collaboration put into the design and construction has resulted in not merely a “house,” but truly a special “home away from home” for families of children who are undergoing vital medical care.

The entire project was designed to be a place of warmth and brightness. The building’s exterior is anchored by natural stone and a wrap-around covered porch that reflects the area’s historic residential architecture. The four-story house is complete with the main foyer highlighted by a four-story open stained wood staircase that pierces giant, LED-lit stalks of a donor art sculpture that runs from the basement to the roof.

The first story offers a large and open kitchen to help facilitate the food and meal preparation provided to the families by volunteers, a hearth room with large windows and a stone fireplace, and a library offering a more sequestered place for activities. The basement features a media room and an interactive children’s play area. The two upper floors have 20 private bedrooms for temporary family lodging featuring window seats and large windows drawing in natural light.
