First Baptist Church of Raytown

First Baptist Raytown

Location: Raytown, Missouri
Year Completed: 2005
Size: 160,000 SF

HMN Architects provided full architectural and planning services for the First Baptist Church of Raytown. The project consisted of the relocation of the existing congregation that had outgrown their former location. The church was master planned and carried out in three phases.

The first phase contained the main worship center building with the sanctuary, classrooms, nursery, and other ancillary spaces. The architectural design is the result of the church’s preference for a traditional style with contemporary planning concepts.

Phase two included a three-story education building and this phase began during the construction of phase one. The building was located adjacent to the main building for direct access and common usage, which followed the master plan. The church wanted to be able to use the education center separately from the worship center.

The third phase, the recreation outreach center, includes a family life center and administrative offices, as well as the gymnasium, fellowship atrium, youth auditorium, restaurant, lounge, weight room, daycare, locker rooms, and general classrooms. This project’s unique features include a drop-off canopy area, a black box theatre area, large gaming area, gymnasium and an elevated running track. Another distinct feature is this facility is not for the congregates only, it is open to the public.

The site was a major challenge on this project. This large recreational facility needed to fit into a small space in conjunction with the attached church. Through careful design and diligent work with the owner, HMN was able to design a recreational facility that accommodated the church’s needs.
