Durrie Vision – A Well-Known Leader in Vision Correction

Durrie Vision

HMN Architects partnered with HNTB to provide architectural, interior design, and planning services for Durrie Vision’s relocation and expansion project. Durrie Vision, a refractive surgery and research facility specializing in laser vision correction, moved their corporate office down the road from their previous location in Overland Park, Kansas. The relocation increased their medical office footprint by 50% – from 10,000 to 15,000 square-feet. The additional space allowed Durrie Vision to add a laser suite to accommodate the increasing demand for vision correction procedures. These procedures treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Having a sleek, modern aesthetic for their new space was a top priority for Durrie Vision. Refractive vision correction has come a long way – advancements in technology and techniques have led to new procedures, more customized treatment options, and improved outcomes. Durrie Vision has been a leader in refractive surgery for over 30 years.

Before relocating, Durrie Vision sought assistance in vetting possible office building locations to move their operations. HMN Architects conducted a thorough building analysis on two potential sites to determine the condition of the buildings, and “test fits” were drawn to see if the space was acceptable for their operations. Vibration analysis was also performed on one location with an elevated slab to determine if the area was suitable for the equipment.

The final selection for Durrie Vision was the location with the elevated slab. However, the analysis indicated the vibration in the slab was not within the criteria that were required by the equipment specification. To fix this, HMN Architects designed an additional structure to alleviate the issue, and subsequent testing proved the addition was successful in addressing the problem.

With the location selected, the team began designing the renovation work to accommodate the staff and patient needs. The medical office space divided into three main areas – eye clinic, Lasik suite, and administrative. The eye clinic is the first area that patients see as they enter the facility. There is a reception desk, 11 exam rooms, testing areas, counselor offices, and staff work spaces. The new office expands the total number of laser vision correction suites to three, including a suite specifically designed to perform the SMILE laser eye surgery using a VisuMax femtosecond laser, approved in 2016, and is one of the latest advancement in laser eye surgery. The Lasik suite also includes a sub-sterile room, four pre/post-exam rooms, testing areas, and various support spaces. Administrative space encompasses the offices, break room, and conference rooms.
